Africa surpasses 500 Million Mobile Subscriptions

According to Informa Telecoms and Media the African mobile market has surpassed 500 Million Mobile subscriptions and with 10% of the world’s mobile subscriptions being in Africa, it was one of the world’s fastest growing regions. African subscription numbers increased by 18% for the first three quarters.

This growth is expected to slow as markets mature but no one can deny the great opportunities that Africa offer investors, social organisations and entrepreneurs. Africa also have over 12 million mobile broadband users that will increase to an expected 265 million by 2015.

The mobile revolution that has swept through Africa has made mobile telephony widely available. However Africa still have substantial under-served markets – but this will change over the next 5 years and presents endless opportunities to use mobile phones to reconstruct communities.

  1. Hi Marlon. I attempted to send a msg via your website last week but don’t think it worked.
I’m very interested in your company’s work with Mxit regarding counselling & education. I am an author & former teen mom looking to start a local support group for young moms who are often ostracised from their communities. I thought that Mxit could be an important tool in getting info out regarding what to do in the case of a crisis pregnancy, re. options etc, as well as for those moms who keep their babies – they need parenting support & social interaction from others in the situation. I’d love some more info on how to set this up, who to speak to at Mxit etc. Can you help? More info about me & my book at http://tracyengelbrecht.com

    Thanks for your time.
    Tracy
