First few days in Finland Helsinki

This week has been an exciting adventure for research, development, business and innovation. 19032010984 First it was a visit to the new Aalto University where I am hosted by Prof. Matti Hämäläinen and we were discussing the role of mobile phones in emerging countries. With the UN research report suggesting 5 Billion mobile devices by the end of 2010 it is no surprise that many innovators are exploring the use of this ever present technology to bring about social change. This meeting was followed by a visit to Nokia where I met with Greg Smiley and exploring ways on how communities can gain from the innovation processes at Nokia.

Next stop this week was a meeting with Marketing for International Development (M4ID) who leverage Social Media for International Development. It was such an eye opener to see how M4ID uses Social Media to empower non-profits and to realize the immense potential of this new communication technology so that they in turn can make a greater impact in development and health. Mari Tikkanen, Managing Director M4ID believes that “The Internet is enabling ordinary people to do extraordinary things.” and the Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs) will hopefully establish a partnership with M4ID in the near future. You can follow more from this amazing organisation on twitter.

Center of Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) also hosted me and I got to learn more about ENOLL (European Network of Living Labs) and the movement towards an open Innovation System. After presenting the model of Community-driven innovation and the story of RLabs the feedback was very helpful to further develop this model to ensure the empowerment of citizens whose well being are being threatened.
